New research by the Motor Industry Research Association shows that worn tyres significantly increase the risk of an accident on wet roads by extending the stopping distance. Tyres with a tread depth of 3mm offer 25 per cent better performance than those worn down to the legal minimum.

This represents an extra eight metres in wet conditions - almost the length of a double-decker bus. Tyre grip when cornering is similarly affected, with an increased risk of aquaplaning on wet roads.
